I was talking to a friend the other day, she adopted a little boy some time ago. He was less than two years old when she first visited him at an orphanage, and that moment was graved in her memory forever. The little one took one of her shoes in his arms and ran away with it, retreating into a corner of an adjoining room out of sight, holding the shoe close to his chest. A devastating gesture, worth more than any spoken word, and which was decisive for my friend in making a decision about that child.
\nThat scene impressed me beyond words, the more so as it came from a child who had just learned to walk and who did not know how to disguise himself in order to draw attention to himself. I think that the gesture is representative for many other children and even for many adults, who have faced throughout their lives an emotional void that marked them deeply and which, implicitly, marked their existence.
\nThe whole world longs for love and recognition, regardless of race or civilisation, with varying degrees of feeling and manifestation, but it does. All the aggression that exists in the world, that seems to increase every single day, all the addictions that keep souls captive in a world that seems bearable to them, all of these speak for themselves.
\nThe world can only be healed with love. With greatness coming from the soul, not with the grandeur of material accumulations. With gentleness and tender gestures, not with emphatic attitudes that mask the suffering and the trauma. With beautiful words, not by offending or arguing. It can be healed by actually spending time with one another, not with escapism and entertainment substitutes that have nothing to do with real life.
\nA piece of love is worth more than any gesture or any word that is not based on love, because only love nourishes the soul, providing the necessary strength to move forward, however difficult and however challenging life may be.
\nI have seen families that were highly regarded and socially appreciated but lacked love, and I have seen poor, struggling families whose strength of love gave them the strength to gracefully go through each day without stumbling or asking questions about the value of life. Such questions are only asked by those who do not love. Those who love already know the answer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
