A fried potatoes dinner

A friend I haven’t talked to in a while invited herself over for a fried potatoes dinner. We don’t see each other very often, but like me, she likes surprises. A bowl of fries means nothing to many, some being caught up in the webs of everyday life, others perhaps bored, always wanting something spectacular. For us it was a reason for joy related to the unexpected meeting, where we enjoyed a simple, unforgettable dinner, sprinkled with conversation. Creating tasty moments does not require much: a thought that takes you to another soul, the spark of an idea that appeared unexpectedly, a minimalist background.

This dinner reminded me of another fried potato dinner in college, on one of those sleepless nights, when my roommates and I would engage in those never-ending discussions. At one point, one of us got the idea to fry potatoes. It was past midnight. I turned on the light, opened the window, inviting the night into the room, and began preparations. Two went to buy wine from the 24-hour convenience store in the student quarter, and the other colleague and I stayed to peel potatoes. It turned out to be a gorgeous dinner served at 3 o’clock at night, on a blanket spread out on the carpet, with a glass of wine in hand and a few tunes played on the guitar.

Beautiful moments are created with the soul. We just have to remember from time to time that, beyond the routine of this life, there are friends, there is the joy of souls calling, there are flashes of thought that transform a seemingly common moment into a special, unforgettable moment.
